Jeep details six New Concepts

Jeep released details on six new concepts the company crafted at this year’s Easter Jeep Safari, including the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk Concept. And while that vehicle boasts a slew of off-road goodies, including tow hooks, aggressive Goodyear Wrangler rubber and a rear light bar, we’re more interested in the wicked Mighty FC Concept.

Engineers built the Mighty FC as a tribute to the Jeep Forward Control that was offered between 1956 and 1965. Using a 2012 Wrangler Rubicon as a platform, the company stretched the wheelbase, stuck the cab ahead of the front axle and threw in a custom drop-side cargo box. Underneath, the Mighty FC uses a set of Mopar eight-lug portal axles, which offer a surprising amount of ground clearance without having to resort to a lift. If you like what you see, the axles are available for a combined price of $23,500. The truck rolls on 40-inch tires, and a King coil-over suspension handles the bumps and bruises of the trail.

Of course, the Jeep J-12 Concept is equally delicious in its own right. An extended version of the JK-8 pickup, the concept began life as a 2012 Wrangler Unlimited, though the frame has been stretched a total of 18 inches. With a full six-foot bed, custom hood and unique fenders, the concept is straight awesome. Build it, Jeep.

The automaker also showed off an accessorized version of the standard Wrangler as well as a Wrangler Traildozer concept (above, right). The latter of the two was built by partnering with the off-road gurus at American Expedition Vehicles. With a 470-horsepower 6.4-liter V8 and a Getrag six-speed manual gearbox, the machine has the go-bits to tackle any trail. Dana 44 axles with electronic locking differentials at the front and rear are also part of the package.

Likewise, the Wrangler Apache concept gets its power from the same fire-breathing Hemi, though that vehicle uses a Mopar conversion kit for the swap. With a beefy lift and 5.13 axles, the Apache should have no problem taking on the rocks of Moab.

Italdesign Giugiaro Brivido Concept

What’s Italian for thrilling? The Italdesign Giugiaro Brivido. (Well, it’s Italian for ‘thrill’ anyway.) And we see what they’re on about. The underpinnings come from parent company Volkswagen, including the supercharged 3.0-liter 360-horsepower V6 engine and eight-speed automatic gearbox. Coupled with an electric motor, this hybrid GT can scoot to 60 in 5.8 seconds while exhausting just 154 grams per kilometer of carbon dioxide. Slippery aerodynamics allow for a top speed of 171 miles per hour and also provide a sleek shape that can seat four passengers in comfort.

Though Giugiaro is quick to point out that this is a fully functional prototype, it’s got concept written all over it. Take, for instance, the giant gullwing doors that serve as portals for the front and rear seats, the two-sided instrument cluster full of LCD screens (including an iPad for the passenger) and joystick-style steering apparatus.

And if one Brivido Concept is good, two Brivido Concepts must be even better. Giugiaro brought along a second machine in race trim, sporting distinctive Martini Racing livery. We don’t have any details on what’s underneath the fetching bodywork.

Touring Superleggera Disco Volante Concept

It’s been 60 years since the 1952 Alfa Romeo C52 Disco Volante concepts lounged on the stages of the world’s auto shows, and Touring Superleggera has taken to marking the occasion with a Disco Volante of its own, a striking coupe that debuted at this year’s Geneva Motor Show.

The modern flying saucer pays homage to its ancestors with flat-top fenders and a split grille. Even so, it’s hard to miss the vehicle’s donor. Not surprisingly, the new Disco Volante is built on the bones of the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, and relies on the same 4.7-liter V8 found in that machine. As such, buyers can look forward to 443 horsepower pumped exclusively to the rear wheels.

That’s right. We said “buyers.” This Disco Volante will be available in limited quantities (the company isn’t saying how limited), though expect to pay a pretty penny for each one. Touring Superleggera says each example will be coachbuilt to order.

ZR1 versus C6.R racer in Corvette straight-line race

Road & Track lined up the Corvette ZR1 next to the Corvette C6.R ALMS racing car to see how they’d compete in a straight line. Notice we didn’t say “drag” or “drag race,” since this isn’t at the track and we can’t tell the distance of the contest.

The C6.R is based on the ZR1, but comes in with about 500 horsepower to push its 2,745-pound weight and uses a sequential transmission and slicks. The ZR1 works with 638 horses but has 3,345 pounds to get going through a six-speed manual transmission and street tires.

The race starts at 0:15 seconds and ends at 0:23.

Video: Watch the Lingenfelter Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 hit 202 mph

Earlier this month Lingenfelter Performance Engineering (LPE) announced that its modified Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 hit a top speed 202 mph. The tuner company has now released a video of the Camaro ZL1 hitting that top speed figure and you can check it all out below.

Lingenfelter Camaro ZL1 modification packages come in three levels – a 630-hp package, a 700-hp package and a 720-hp package.

Power for the stock 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 comes from a LSA 6.2L supercharged V8 making 580 horsepower and 556 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. 0 to 60 mph comes in just 4 seconds when mated to the manual transmission and 3.9 when mated to the automatic. Top speed comes in at 180 mph for the manual and 184 for the automatic. Prices start at $54,995.

Special Edition Lotus Evora

The F1 Evora GTE F1 Special Edition features the Lotus F1 team’s colors and graphics, including a large Lotus insignia on the rear wing and gold finish alloy wheels. There is also a “10” logo on the vehicle to represent the number used by Kimi Räikkönen’s team mate, Romain Grosjean, this season. The carbon fiber finish to the body is highlighted by copper accents to emulate traditional F1 livery and that color scheme gets thrown on the interior with specially trimmed bucket seats with gold piping and exclusive Lotus F1 Team Special Edition appliqués.

The standard Evora GTE is powered by a race-tuned 3.5-liter V6 engine that delivers a total of 444 HP, making it the most powerful Lotus road car ever built. That engine seems to be good enough for Lotus because that is exactly what is powering their F1 Special Edition. Performance, however, should be better considering the vehicle has dropped 100kg/220 lbs.

Why do they call it “Widow Maker”? We’ll get to that in a minute. Powered by a 5.4L supercharged V8, the UBB Widow Maker 1100 Mustang ($135,000) pumps out a crazy 1,100 hp, good for a 0-60 dash of 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 230 mph. Other custom features include a full carbon body kit, 19-inch black alloy wheels, Brembo brakes, Advan traction control, and available Recaro seats, de-cat pipes, and built-in laser jammers. So back to the original question — they call it “Widow Maker” because if you’re not careful, it’ll live up to its name.

Virgil Exner Jr.’s Simca Special

Virgil Exner Jr. designed this concept car as his version of an ideal sports car for his master’s thesis while studying fine arts at the University of Notre Dame. While the design fulfilled its purpose – it earned Exner Jr. the University’s Jacques Gold Medal of Fine Art and enabled him to earn his master’s – Exner Jr. continued to work on the concept after graduation, turning it into a reality in fiberglass from 1956 to 1958. He based the car on a modified Fiat 1100 chassis, with power from a Simca Huit’s 1.2-liter four-cylinder engine and drivetrain. The finned body originally used a clear plastic canopy over the two front seats, but SCCA racer Beau Hickory, who would own the Simca Special in two different stints over the next few decades and prepare the car as a daily driver, removed the canopy in favor of a wraparound windshield and T-top system. Over the years, its original Simca engine was replaced with a Datsun four-cylinder engine, but the rest of the car retains much of Exner Jr.’s original styling cues.

Shelby David Yurman Limited Edition Timepieces

Carroll Shelby in cooperation with David Yurman have unveiled a very cool limited edition watch in order to commemorate the unveiling of the Shelby 1000. The watch will be limited to only 300 units: 150 stainless steel and 150 black PVD versions.

The watch features a 43.5mm stainless steel and rubber case, which houses the Swiss automatic chronograph Valjoux 7753 movement. A tachymeter is engraved on the bezel, allowing the wearer to log lap times with ease and the iconic Shelby Cobra insignia is hand-finished and applied to the multi-layer galvanic dial, which is accentuated by vertical, guilloche racing stripes. The watch is also featuring a highly textured natural rubber strap inspired by the cobra snake.

“Shelby and David Yurman are among the most respected American brands in their industries,” said Tracey Smith, president of Carroll Shelby Licensing. “Just like the cars that created the Shelby American legend, David Yurman creates handcrafted jewelry and timepieces that are equally valued by collectors and enthusiasts. Effector has some features that differ from the theme I used to use. I'll point out some of the differences in the paragraphs that follow.

Images

My primary reason for switching was to take advantage of the 700 pixel layout size.  The vast majority of my posts are images and they look much better at this larger size. The bad news, however, is that smaller images are enlarged to 700 pixels and don't looks so good. Fortunately, you can click on the pop-up full-size icon in the upper right corner of the image and see it in the smaller size.  Effector supports slider photosets, so look for the navigation bars on either side of photos since I occasionally post multiple photos with a single post

Switching to the Full Tumblr

If you are viewing a single article from my tumblr, you CAN switch to viewing the entire stream of my tumblr articles. All you have to do is click on the title "Crudmudgeonz Tumblr" at the top of the page

If you mouse over the icon the "Archive" tool-tip will appear.   In the archive view, all of my posts will be displayed in a grid view by month and day.  Clicking on a post thumbnail will open the full post it represents.
